About the role

Working closely with the other members of The Energy Management Team, the key purpose of the role is to establish in-house technical capabilities to provide leading-edge insights into the future of energy markets and commodity risk. It is expected that the technical capabilities developed will find wider application across business platforms and portfolio companies. The role may also involve leveraging the capabilities to generate insights for parts of the wider Fund that are driven by energy prices and macro indicators.

About the team

This role sits within the Energy Management Team which is a team of ten professionals with deep expertise in merchant energy markets and risk management, based in London and North America. The team has a dual mandate, developing the in-house view on the revenue line of offshore wind projects and running a global centre of research and analytics covering energy and commodity markets.

 

Key responsibilities

Development and maintenance of applications, analytical capabilities and databases

  • Build capabilities to harvest data for the forecasting of energy market prices and macro indicators and Renewables’ existing and new investments. This will include developing, maintaining and running programs and tools which interface with the wider team’s workstreams and deliverables.
  • Structuring data in databases for suitable storage and use, augmenting and amending the current primary PostgreSQL platform where sensible to co-locate data in the same structure.
  • Working with team members to develop analytical tools and programs to provide commercially insightful content to stakeholders across the business.

 

Essential skills and experience

  • First degree in computer science or software engineering. Otherwise, first degree in a numerate subject with demonstrated programming experience in the academic program. 2+ years of software development experience in a business setting no matter the academic background.
  • Demonstrated experience with at least two professional software development frameworks and Github version management deployments, Python and SQL background ideal.
  • Some level of experience and competence managing cloud-based solution stacks (we are currently Azure-based).
  • Proficiency in dashboarding tools such as Tableau and PowerBI, and presentation software.
  • Compency with MS Excel.
  • Experience of working with energy market data and familiarity with energy market concepts would be advantageous. Otherwise, interest in and willingness to learn about energy markets is essential.

  • Ability to break down complex problems into smaller parts and design rapid solutions.
  • Recognising information requirements; performing research, data aggregation as well as building analytics/tools to address the needs.

  • Managing priorities, deadlines and stakeholder expectations independently with limited supervision.
  • Being delivery focussed with the ability to work through problems and reach solutions quickly and independently as well as part of a team.

Communication

  • Ability to communicate complex information and ideas clearly, both in oral and written form using appropriate language, style and detail depending on audience and the purpose.
  • Ability to anticipate the information that others will need.

 

Desirable skills and experience

  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant numerate subject.
  • Experience in energy markets. An understanding of energy market concepts such as fundamentals (demand, supply, price formation) spanning major commodities (oil, gas, power).
  • An understanding of economic and financial modelling with a focus on the power and renewables sector.
  • Acquired knowledge of the principal concepts of finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering.
  • Specific knowledge and demonstrated capabilities in econometric & ML modelling, financial (DCF) modelling.
