With all the news concerning Brexit and the prospect of a leadership battle one would have thought that with the lack of clarity on both the Political and Economic landscape, recruitment would be put on hold until at the least the New Year. Over the past 10 years this has proven to be the case.
Where there is a lack of clarity there is a definite slowdown in recruitment activity. This year is different.
Over the last few weeks we are seeing a marked increase in activity compared to this time last year. In fact our clients are interviewing twice as many people per week as they did this time last year. There are two schools of thought for the reasons for this. Firstly, the economy seems to be better shape than it has been for a while. GDP is growing at a faster rate than predicted and the regulatory projects which have stifled the growth of many firms have in the main been completed. On the other side of the coin there is also the theory that many line managers will be wanting to fill their roles before year end in case they lose head count in the new year.
This year does feel different. From the many conversations that we have been having there is obviously a worry about Brexit but it is not doom laden as it was 2 years ago so I suspect that although things don’t look great right now they certainly look better than they have in the past.
